Steelers' Mike Tomlin not ready to name starting QB yet

Even if Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin knows who his Week 1 starting quarterback will be, he is not ready to make that announcement publicly.

He reiterated that point at his weekly press conference on Tuesday when he said he is still not going to name who will be under center against the Cincinnati Bengals when the 2022 season begins.

Veteran Mitch Trubisky entered training camp as the odds-on favorite to secure that spot, but first-round pick Kenny Pickett made a pretty strong push with a stellar showing during the team's three preseason games.

Pickett went 29-for-36 (80.1 percent completion percentage) for 261 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Those numbers included a last-minute, game-winning touchdown drive in the first preseason game against Seattle and then a nearly flawless two-minute drill against Jacksonville's first-team defense in the second game.

While Pickett is expected to be the future of the position in Pittsburgh, Trubisky did not really do anything to lose his hold on the starting job in the short term. He also had a strong preseason showing with the first-team offense and led a strong two-minute drive of his own against Detroit on Sunday.

Mason Rudolph, entering his fourth season with the team, has become an afterthought and seems slated to open the season third on the depth chart. The team is hesitant to trade him given his knowledge of the offense and his experience.
