Steelers' Mitchell Trubisky a 'long shot' to replace Daniel Jones for Giants in 2023?

2017 first-round draft pick Mitchell Trubisky failed to find a long-term home with the Chicago Bears and then spent the 2021 NFL season as a backup with the Buffalo Bills, where he was first introduced to then-Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen and then-Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

The New York Giants hired Schoen to be their general manager this winter, and Schoen chose Daboll to be his head coach. Neither Schoen nor Daboll had any prior attachment to Giants quarterback and 2019 first-round draft choice Daniel Jones, so it wasn't surprising when some linked Big Blue with Trubisky in February.

Such a marriage wasn't to be, as Trubisky ultimately put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is probably on track to be their starter for Week 1 next month. As for Jones, the Giants declined the fifth-year option attached to his rookie deal this spring, a decision that essentially sent the 25-year-old who has experienced ups and downs during his New York tenure into a contract year.

ESPN's Dan Graziano noted for a piece published on Friday morning that first-round draft selection Kenny Pickett will "most likely" have replaced Trubisky atop Pittsburgh's depth chart by this time next year. Graziano also thinks Schoen and Daboll will look to the 2023 draft to find their long-term QB1.

"There are going to be quality QB prospects in next year's draft that weren't in April's," Graziano wrote. "C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Will Levis ... If Jones flops and the Giants finish with another high pick, they'll be in a draft spot from which Daboll and GM Joe Schoen can select his replacement."

What does any of this have to do with Trubisky? Interestingly, Graziano added the 27-year-old could be a "long shot" bridge quarterback for the 2023 Giants.

"He was (Josh) Allen's backup in Buffalo last year, and by all accounts, Daboll enjoyed the experience and saw something in the former No. 2 overall pick," Graziano said of Trubisky. "Pittsburgh should, if all goes to plan, have moved on to 2021 first-rounder Kenny Pickett by then. If the Giants don't like where they are in the draft, Trubisky could be an appealing and familiar option for Daboll in the meantime."

It's worth mentioning the Giants could acquire Trubisky in free agency or a trade next year and then still use a first-round asset to select a signal-caller who could sit and learn behind a journeyman who may be a useful temporary option at the sport's most important position.
