Steelers' Mitchell Trubisky must be 'outplayed by a considerable margin' to lose job this summer?

Things can, and often do, change quickly in the NFL during training camp practices and preseason games. Players go down to injuries, and some flip figurative switches or become revelations as rookies.

For now, though, it's beyond clear to anybody who has followed reports and rumors on the subject that free-agent acquisition Mitchell Trubisky is the runaway favorite to be named the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers for Week 1 in September ahead of both first-round draft selection Kenny Pickett and backup Mason Rudolph.

Some understandably have asked what Pickett and/or Rudolph would have to do to unseat the former Chicago Bears starter and Buffalo Bills No. 2 atop the depth chart by Sept. 11. According to an Associated Press piece shared late Friday afternoon, the answer to that is "plenty."

"The three-way duel — for now — between Trubisky, Pickett and Mason Rudolph will dominate the conversation throughout August," The AP notes. "Trubisky worked almost exclusively with the starters during organized team activities and minicamp, meaning if he’s going to be unseated, he’s going to have to be outplayed by a considerable margin."

Earlier this week, outlet The 33rd Team called the signing of veteran defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi Pittsburgh's "most savvy" offseason move.

"There are few other truly vacant jobs up for grabs, though Ogunjobi — if healthy — could be in line to take the majority of snaps at defensive tackle, which would let (Tyson) Alualu be more of a rotational player at age 35," The AP added about that pickup.
