Steelers OC Matt Canada has a 'million reasons why' offense can't score, but won't name one
Matt Canada said there are, "a million reasons why" the Steelers aren't putting points on the board in a Thursday news conference. When reporters asked the offensive coordinator to name one, he refused, per Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Explaining, that this precious information is reserved to team meetings.
It's clear why Canada defended himself. Angry Pittsburgh fans and media members might say 'he's one reason they can't score.'
"The offensive play calling is juvenile," said Steelers babbler Mark Madden on his Monday podcast. "It's scared. Whether [quarterback Mitch Trubisky] is scared or Matt Canada is scared, I don't know. But it's scared. It's cowardly."
This scrutiny is harsh, but it's hard to feel sympathy for an offensive coordinator who's made talented offensive players look like scraps.
The Steelers offense has two skill players who are both Pro Bowlers, running back Najee Harris and wide receiver Diontae Johnson. These pieces can produce an electric offense.
They look flat however, scoring 18 points per game, below the league average of 21. They're 19th in scoring offense.
Quarterback is a question mark for the Steelers, Trubisky is limited and backup Kenny Pickett is a rookie who hasn't earned the trust of head coach Mike Tomlin.
Yet, Canada doesn't give Trubisky opportunities to strike, limiting his ability to change plays. Canada told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he's ''evolving that," which is vague.
Thankfully for Canada, Tomlin said in a Tuesday news conference "smile in the face of adversity," meaning he's not making a drastic change.
