Steelers position group named one of NFL's weakest

The Steelers rebuilt their inside linebacker room this offseason after it didn't post a single takeaway in 2022. But has Pittsburgh done enough to keep its new-look group competitive?

Pro Football Focus' Zoltan Buday doesn't think so, naming it one of the weakest position groups in the NFL. "It is debatable whether they have managed to upgrade the position over the last month," Buday writes.

The Steelers let free-agent linebackers Devin Bush and Robert Spillane walk and released LB Myles Jack. Pittsburgh then went on to sign linebackers Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts in free agency.

Holcomb, who is still only 26, totaled 142 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions in 2021. Roberts turns 29 in April and had a career-high 107 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2022.

However, the ranking shouldn't come as too much of a surprise as the Steelers' inside linebacker room is now made up of a fifth-round pick (Holcomb), a sixth-round pick (Roberts) and two seventh-round picks (Mark Robinson and Tae Crowder).

Although you should never judge where a player is drafted, there doesn't seem to be a ton of upside. Pittsburgh may add an insider linebacker with a higher ceiling in the draft, but for now, its new-look group is a little worrisome heading into 2023.
