Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky says he has to get playmakers the football

Through the first two weeks of the NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense has been bad. Very bad. And everybody is taking their fair share of the blame, from the makeshift offensive line to second-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada, to new starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky. 

They all have a hand in it.

On Tuesday, Trubisky took some ownership for the struggles and said that there have been opportunities for the team to make plays downfield and that he has to do a better job of getting the football to the team's playmakers.

“It’s there. We have had our opportunities,” Said Trubisky on Tuesday, via the Tribune-Review's Chris Adamski.

“I can take shots downfield. I think I can look for 14 (George Picks) more often. He’s doing a great job for us, and I just gotta get these playmakers the football. Whatever route they are running, I just gotta get them the ball. It really comes down to me making better decisions, being aggressive, and putting ourselves in that position.”

One of the biggest criticisms of the Steelers' offense -- and Trubisky -- so far has been the overwhelming conservative nature of it. They rarely look downfield, while the overwhelming majority of the passing plays seem to be directed into the flat or behind the line of scrimmage.

George Pickens, the team's second-round draft pick, was the star of training camp and the preseason with his big-play potential but has been a non-factor through the first two games, catching just two passes on six targets. 

In the days after their 17-14 loss to the New England Patriots, the Steelers players and coaches keep saying the plays are there and players, including Pickens, are open. 

Now they just have to figure out a way to get them the ball.

The Steelers have scored just two offensive touchdowns in their first two games of the season. They take a 1-1 record into Thursday's game against their AFC North rival the Cleveland Browns.
