The Steelers have released running back Greg Bell and wide receivers Jalen Camp and Jacob Copeland while signing wide receiver Denzel Mims and offensive tackle Obinna Eze, the team announced on Tuesday.
Bell came out of San Diego State and had a stint in 2022 with the Detroit Lions. But was injured and suffered a hamstring in training camp. He would return for 2023, but the team waived him on July 22nd. Over his college career at three different stops, Bell racked up over 4,000 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns. In his final season with the Aztecs, he posted over 1000 rushing yards with the team.
Copeland, a 5-foot-11, 201-pound Maryland alum, attended the East-West Shrine Bowl and the NFL Combine in the pre-draft process, where the Steelers scouted him heavily. Area scout Mike Butler was also at his Pro Day.
He turned in an excelled Relative Athletic Score of 8.19, showing excellent straight-line speed (4.42-second 40-yard dash) and explosiveness (10-foot-7 broad jump) but below-average agility (4.47-second short shuttle).
A 6-foot-2, 220-pound receiver, Camp was recruited to Georgia Tech under the option scheme of former head coach Paul Johnson and is big and physical for the position. In his pre-draft process, he put up 30 bench press reps, the highest for a wide receiver in 2021, and also posted strong numbers in explosiveness with a 10-foot-5 broad jump and a 39.5-inch vertical. In total, he earned a 9.75 out of 10 Relative Athletic Score.
Mims. 25, has 42 career catches for 676 yards and has never scored a touchdown. In 2022, he caught 11 passes for 186 yards as he moved in and out of the lineup, with questions about Elijah Moore and other injuries occurring with the Jets. Still, Mims never got a firm foothold in the rotation and was benched when everything settled back into place.
Eze, 25, is in his second professional season. The 6-foot-8, 325-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria, joined the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent coming out of TCU in 2022.
Eze spent the entire 2022 season on the Detroit practice squad without being activated for a game. He re-signed with the Lions for the 2023 season, but was cut on Aug. 27 at the end of the preseason.
Coming out of TCU, Eze did not test well in the pre-draft process. He had slow agility numbers, with a 5.08-second short shuttle and an 8.2-second three-cone drill. He also only posted 18 bench press reps. His overall Relative Athletic Score was a 5.33 out of 10. Before his time at TCU, Eze spent four seasons at Memphis.
