Pittsburgh Steelers former wide receiver and legendary figure, Hines Ward recently experienced a couple of disappointments that might open the door for a potential return to the organization in a different capacity. While Ward missed out on being named a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2024, he also saw his head coaching role with the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL come to an end. This unexpected turn of events could present a golden opportunity for the Steelers to tap into Ward's expertise by bringing him back as their wide receivers coach.

Ward's exclusion from the list of finalists for the class of 2024 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame was met with disappointment by many, including Steeler Nation. Ward's remarkable career, which spanned 14 seasons with the Steelers, featured numerous accolades, including four Pro Bowl selections, two Super Bowl championships and a Super Bowl MVP. His contributions to the franchise are etched in the team's history, making him a beloved figure in Pittsburgh.

Despite his impressive resume, Ward's omission from the Hall of Fame finalists was a bitter pill to swallow for those who cherished his time as a Steeler. However, this disappointment didn't end there for Ward.

On the heels of this Hall of Fame letdown, James Larsen broke the news that Ward would be replaced as the head coach of the Brahmas, with Wade Phillips assuming the role. While this change may have been unexpected and disappointing for Ward, it might just be the silver lining that benefits the Steelers.

The Steelers hired Frisman Jackson as their wide receivers coach in February 2022, following the decision to not renew the contract of Ike Hilliard. While the team's decision to retain or part ways with Jackson remains uncertain, the idea of bringing Ward back into the coaching fold is intriguing.

Steelers Wide Receivers Need Mentorship

Under Jackson's tutelage, the Steelers' wide receiver group has faced challenges related to character, attitude, and effort. While it's unfair to place the blame solely on the coach, these issues cannot be ignored. Jackson hasn't done enough as a wide receivers coach in 2023 to be excluded from replacement. This is where Ward's potential return could be transformative.

One of the most significant advantages of having Ward as a wide receivers coach would be his mentorship and leadership qualities. George Pickens, a promising talent with the Steelers, could particularly benefit from Ward's guidance. Pickens has displayed moments of excellence as a blocker, but has also shown a tendency to prioritize individual performance over team play.

Ward's legacy with the Steelers is built on his gritty toughness, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to putting the team first. These attributes endeared him to Steelers fans during his illustrious career. Ward's enduring legacy as a Steeler icon could bring a much-needed cultural shift to the wide receiver room.

If appointed as the wide receivers coach, Ward's presence alone could alter the dynamic in the room. His no-nonsense approach and emphasis on teamwork could help address the emotional and effort-related challenges faced by the current crop of receivers.

The Steelers should seriously consider the prospect of bringing Ward back to his former team as their wide receivers coach. His unmatched dedication, leadership qualities, and team-first mentality could provide the remedy to the issues that have plagued the wide receiver group under Jackson's watch.

While Ward's recent disappointments may have cast a shadow, they have also illuminated a potential path back to the Steelers' coaching staff. This move has the potential to breathe new life into the team's offense and contribute significantly to the growth and maturity of young talents like Pickens and Diontae Johnson. For the Steelers, it's a chance to leverage the wisdom and winning spirit of a true legend.

Ward's coaching journey includes serving as an offensive intern with the Steelers in 2017, followed by coaching as an offensive assistant for the New York Jets from 2019 to 2020. In 2021, he took on the role of wide receivers coach for Florida Atlantic, further honing his coaching skills. Most recently, Ward assumed the head coaching position for the Brahmas in 2023. This diverse coaching experience positions him as a compelling candidate to take over as the Steelers' wide receivers coach, should the team decide not to renew Jackson's contract.
