The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to sign safety/linebacker Tanner Muse, according to multiple media reports, the first by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Muse, 26, was a third-round draft pick of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, but missed his rookie season with a toe injury and was released in 2021 without ever playing a snap for the Raiders.
He caught on with the Seattle Seahawks, where he played six games in 2021 and all 17 games in 2022, mostly on special teams. He played 325 snaps of special teams last season, the second-most on the Seahawks.
The 6-foot-2, 227-pound Muse was a safety at Clemson, where he won a pair of College Football Playoff National Championships, but has struggled to find a position fit in the NFL.
The Steelers have two other players on their roster in that same mold in Keanu Neal and Miles Killebrew. The Steelers have not retained several of their top special teamer from 2022. Derek Watt (290 snaps), Benny Snell (284), Marcus Allen (230) and Miles Boykin (207) remain free agents and Jamir Jones (251) was released on Wednesday.
New Steelers inside linebackers coach Aaron Curry worked with Muse for two seasons while he coached in Seattle before coming to Pittsburgh.
Muse is a Belmont, North Carolina native. His younger brother, Nick Muse, plays tight end for the Minnesota Vikings.
The terms of the contract have not yet been reported. Muse will give the Steelers 79 players on their offseason roster, 11 shy of the maximum of 90.
