Steelers sign Jeremy McNichols, release fellow RB Trey Edmunds

The Pittsburgh Steelers released veteran running back and special teams operative Trey Edmunds at the start of training camp. They added a new RB to their depth chart on Tuesday.

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Pittsburgh signed veteran ball-carrier Jeremy McNichols to a one-year contract and, in a corresponding roster move, officially released Edmunds. McNichols will now compete with the likes of Benny Snell Jr., Anthony McFarland Jr., Mataeo Durant and Jaylen Warren for the right to be the team's primary backup behind starter Najee Harris.

Financial terms of McNichols' deal weren't disclosed.

McNichols initially entered the NFL when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made him a fifth-round selection during the 2017 draft. He's since become a journeyman who has spent time with multiple other organizations. Most recently, the 26-year-old was with the Tennessee Titans during the 2020 and 2021 campaigns, during which he appeared in a total of 30 regular-season games. Across his pro career, McNichols has accumulated 364 yards and one touchdown on 90 carries to go along with 40 receptions for 295 yards and a single additional score.

As Curt Popejoy mentioned for Steelers Wire/USA Today, McNichols should receive a real opportunity to impress coaches throughout training camp and the preseason considering the club's other choices at his position behind Harris.
