Pittsburgh Steelers star, TJ Watt played just 10 games in 2022, and he didn't have nearly the same impact as he did in the 2021 season. As a result, many people doubted him heading into 2023. He's dealt with several injuries this year, but somehow, he still has yet to miss a game. Watt has returned to his dominant self too, as he ranks second in the NFL with 14 sacks on the year. The seventh-year pro remains one of the favorites to win AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, which would be his second time taking home the award.
In Week 14 against the New England Patriots, it was reported that Watt suffered a head injury. It's become a controversy in the past few days, as some believe the Steelers staff didn't handle the head injury in the correct manner. Well, in video obtained by 93.7 The Fan, Watt was seen practicing on Tuesday. While that's not always a clear indicator of game status with concussions, it's at least a positive sign that he may play on Saturday. Fellow edge rusher Alex Highsmith, who is also in the concussion protocol, was spotted practicing alongside Watt as well.
If both edge rushers are unable to go in Week 15, it could spell trouble for the team's pass rush. Markus Golden would likely be inserted into the starting lineup, and he's making sure that he stays ready. The Steelers defense struggled mightily against the Patriots' lowly offense in Week 14. Fortunately, the unit was able to bounce back in the second half though, which helped get the team back into the game.
Did The Steelers Mishandle Watt's Head Injury In Week 14?
Fellow teammate Cam Heyward cleared the air regarding Watt's suspected head injury during the Week 14 loss via Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The veteran defensive lineman vividly remembers that Watt seemed completely normal on the sidelines, even after the injury.
The fact that Heyward expects both Watt and Highsmith to play in Week 15 is another encouraging sign. The defense continues to be banged up all-around, as even fellow star Minkah Fitzpatrick has dealt with a broken hand recently. The linebacker room has been affected the most, but Elandon Roberts has stepped up in a big way for them. Beyond Golden, who has played 156 defensive snaps this season, Nick Herbig would likely be inserted into the starting lineup if the starters aren't able to play.
The rookie has played 148 defensive snaps in his first NFL season and has racked up two sacks. He's looked promising in limited action, but hasn't seen extended playing time just yet for obvious reasons. It's worth noting that the team signed edge rusher David Perales back to its practice squad on Monday. This is a precautionary depth move with the injuries to Highsmith and Watt.
