Steelers WR Chase Claypool injures shoulder during Friday practice

The quarterback competition between free-agent signing Mitchell Trubisky, career backup Mason Rudolph and first-round draft selection Kenny Pickett has understandably dominated Pittsburgh Steelers headlines throughout the spring and summer months.

A different noteworthy member of the offense is causing concern for the club ahead of the weekend.

Per the NFL's website and Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Pittsburgh wide receiver Chase Claypool suffered a shoulder injury during Friday's practice session. Head coach Mike Tomlin later explained that the issue is "probably not serious" and that the Steelers don't have a "high level of concern" regarding Claypool's long-term availability, but the setback is something that will have to be evaluated further before a proper diagnosis is revealed.

Claypool raised eyebrows last month when he stated during a podcast appearance that he knows he's "a top-three receiver" in the entire NFL, and Pro Football Focus later named the 24-year-old as a potential fantasy football sleeper for the upcoming campaign. Last season, Claypool recorded 59 receptions for 860 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Fellow Pittsburgh receiver Diontae Johnson is in the middle of a so-called "hold in" as he looks to secure a long-term extension from the Steelers before the regular season begins. Johnson's decision was already offering additional opportunities for rookies George Pickens and Calvin Austin III during practices before Friday's development.
