Super Bowl hero, 2020 opt-out Damien Williams joins Bears on one-year deal

Running back and Super Bowl LIV hero Damien Williams officially won't be returning to the Kansas City Chiefs.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t Nick Shook) reports that Williams has agreed to join the Chicago Bears on a one-year contract. The 28-year-old will find at least one familiar face in Chicago, as he played under Bears offensive coordinator Bill Lazor when both were with the Miami Dolphins earlier in their careers.

Williams gained 104 yards on 17 carries and tallied the final two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score, in Kansas City's Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers in February 2020. Roughly five months after that, however, he opted out of the subsequent regular season because of concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and his mother's stage 4 cancer.

The Chiefs publicly supported Williams' decision to sit last season out but released him ahead of the new NFL year that opened March 17.

Across 85 regular-season games since 2014, Williams has accumulated 1,231 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns on the ground and 1,106 receiving yards with 10 receiving scores. He'll join a Chicago backfield that features David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen.
