Alvin Kamara is facing a felony charge after he was arrested for his role in the alleged beating of a man, and the NFL was apparently aware of the serious allegations before the New Orleans Saints star played in the Pro Bowl.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police arrested Kamara at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday following the Pro Bowl. The department released a statement explaining that Kamara was accused of battery by a man who was admitted to the hospital. The running back has been charged with felony battery resulting in substantial bodily harm.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ on Monday that the NFL was aware that Kamara was a suspect in the incident prior to the Pro Bowl. NFL officials were notified hours before kickoff that police were looking for Kamara. The two parties decided to allow Kamara to play with the game and then cooperate with authorities afterword.
LVMPD Assistant Sheriff John McGrath told Dana Gentry of the Nevada Current that the NFL was contacted at around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
“We got in touch with NFL security about 10 o’clock in the morning and let them know that he (Kamara) was a suspect in the case and they located him and he was already on the field,” McGrath said. “So they contacted him and he agreed to meet with us after the game. And so that’s just the way we did it since he was cooperating.”
That obviously raises some questions. Police reportedly have video that shows Kamara and three others he was with punching and kicking a man repeatedly while the alleged victim was on the ground. The allegations against Kamara are particularly troubling.
Kamara caught four passes for 23 yards in the game. While he was technically at his place of work, it’s unclear why the NFL would let him play under those circumstances.
