A proposal to achieve this, suggested by Justin Melo of the Draft Network, involves utilizing the team’s ample salary cap space to upgrade the running back position significantly.
Melo advocates for replacing current starter Brian Robinson Jr. with Saquon Barkley from the New York Giants.
“Washington is also expected to draft a rookie quarterback with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. Signing Barkley would help an inexperienced quarterback make a smoother transition.”
Robinson, while a competent player with an average of four yards per carry last season, is seen as not inhibiting the Commanders from pursuing a substantial upgrade at the position.
Melo points out that Barkley, a two-time Pro Bowler, offers enhancements across the board, particularly excelling as a receiver. Barkley’s impressive 98 receptions over two seasons far surpass Robinson’s 45, showcasing his versatility and impact in the passing game.
Notably, Barkley’s receiving prowess extends beyond traditional running back duties; he can seamlessly transition to slot receiver or wideout alignments. His ability to exploit defenses was evident when he torched the Commanders for three touchdowns in a single season, highlighting his threat in various offensive roles.
Saquon Barkley’s openness to exploring opportunities in the veteran market presents an enticing prospect for the Commanders. With substantial cap space at their disposal, projected at $83,543,548, they could potentially outbid the Giants and secure Barkley’s services, further bolstering their offensive arsenal.
