Teams reportedly inquiring about Giants' Evan Engram as slot WR or TE
Saquon Barkley may be the biggest name that has been involved in offseason trade rumors for the New York Giants, but one of his teammates on offense is apparently drawing interest from teams in free agency as well.
At the tight end position, both Dalton Schultz of the Dallas Cowboys and Mike Gesicki of the Miami Dolphins were placed with the franchise on Tuesday. Per ESPN's Field Yates, Gesicki lined up in the slot 402 times during the 2021 season, more than double the number of snaps he was lined up as a tight end (140), and almost as many times as he lined up from the tight end position, out wide (218) and in the backfield (24) combined.
According to Next Gen Stats, over the past two years, Engram has spent most of his snaps in the slot — 362 snaps in the slot in 2021 and 345 in 2020.
Engram was selected by the Giants in the first round with the 23rd overall pick during the 2017 NFL Draft and is coming off of a season where he led New York in receptions (46) and receiving touchdowns (three), while finishing second in targets (73) and third in receiving yards (408.) Still, the 2021 campaign was a drop-off from Engram's 2020 Pro Bowl season where he finished with 63 catches for 654 receiving yards on 109 targets.
The 27-year-old's best season statistically was his rookie year when he posted career-highs in targets (115), receptions (64), receiving yards (722) and receiving touchdowns (six.)
