Pittsburgh Steelers free agent safety Terrell Edmunds made a post to social media that certainly could be interpreted as a goodbye on Thursday.
Edmunds, who has remained unsigned by the Steelers or another team through the first week and a half of free agency, gave a thank you to Pittsburgh and his teammates.
“Thank you Pittsburgh for making my dreams come to reality!,” Edmunds wrote on Twitter. “You will forever be apart of me and my journey! I’m thankful for all of my coaches, teammates and every fan supporting! To my bruddas y’all kno how we rockin, it’s gonna be luv until the wheels fall off.”
The Steelers have re-signed Edmunds’ backup at strong safety, Damontae Kazee, to a two-year deal earlier this offseason. It’s not clear if the Steelers intended for Kazee to continue his role as the team’s third safety or replace Edmunds. Kazee signed a two-year, $7 million contract last week.
The top safeties on the market have all already signed, with Jessie Bates III going from Cincinnati to Atlanta, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson from Philadelphia to Detroit, and Jordan Poyer staying in Buffalo.
Notable names that remain unsigned include former Cleveland Browns safety John Johnson III and ex-Penn State and Green Bay Packers safety Adrian Amos.
The Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Edmunds has started 75 games over the last five seasons in Pittsburgh. If he is indeed departing, Edmunds had 410 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, two sacks, five interceptions and five passes defended in his Steelers career.
There had been talk of the Steelers landing both Edmunds and his brother Tremaine Edmunds this offseason, as both players were free agents. Tremaine Edmunds left the Buffalo Bills and signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Chicago Bears. In addition to Terrell Edmunds, the Steelers previously employed his other brother, running back Trey Edmunds.
