Terrell Owens echoes Lions' Jared Goff about sports talk shows

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff generated chuckles when he said during a radio interview ahead of this Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the San Francisco 49ers that "anything those guys say on daytime TV, you can skip over that."

Retired superstar wide receiver and Hall of Famer Terrell Owens seems to share Goff's opinion on the matter.

"It's very unfortunate how a lot of these fans listen to these talk shows and they take what these analysts and commentators say to heart because they're on a network and they think that whatever they say is gospel," Owens remarked while speaking with Betway Insider. "When again, you should have guys that have played, and now you're seeing them and you know, an influx of guys that have played the game starting to commentate and...give you real, true, authentic analysis of the game."

Specifically, Owens was speaking about how former Carolina Panthers quarterback and one-time Most Valuable Player Cam Newton sparked controversy back in December when he called certain QB1s "game managers" instead of game-changers at the position.

Newton later insisted that "game manager is not a negative connotation," and Owens backed the veteran quarterback who seemingly hasn't yet called time on his playing days.

"That's what's so unique about now," Owens added. "Guys that are using that platform to really speak truth to what they're seeing. A lot of these guys that are commentating or they're being hired as analysts, some of these guys haven't even played the game."

As Brandon Contes recently noted for Awful Announcing, companies such as ESPN routinely encourage "some dramatization and a performative nature" for debate shows featured on television and radio networks every weekday.

Everyone, including active athletes, would do well to remember such programs are merely forms of entertainment that mean nothing as it pertains to what is and isn't accomplished during games.
