Texans GM Nick Caserio says drafting Stanford QB Davis Mills 'doesn't impact anybody'

The Houston Texans aren't sure what the future holds for the franchise at quarterback. Because of that, they selected Stanford signal-caller Davis Mills in the third round of the NFL draft on Friday night.

Deshaun Watson's future in Houston remains uncertain amid an offseason where he first demanded a trade and later faced allegations of sexual assault by 22 different women.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio said drafting Mills "doesn't impact anybody," according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop.

"Again, our whole philosophy has been to create as much competition as possible, and we'll continue to do that," Caserio said.

The Texans now have Watson, Mills, Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Finley at quarterback. When Caserio was asked if he expects Mills to be the Texans' future franchise QB, the GM avoided the question, Barshop adds.

Mills has appeared in just 13 games over the last two seasons, including five during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, completing 65.5% of his passes for 3,468 yards and 18 touchdowns against eight interceptions. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Mills had a 92.8 Total QBR in starts against ranked opponents over the last two years, which is the third-best in the FBS.

Mills said he was "surprised" when he received the call from the Texans because he had not had much interaction with the franchise prior to the draft.
