Texans interview Josh McCown for head coaching job again, despite lack of experience

Josh McCown has never held a coaching job in the NFL or one at the collegiate level, but for the second offseason in a row, he was interviewed by the Houston Texans for their head coaching vacancy.

McCown, 42, has been an offensive assistant for his son's team at Rusk High School in Texas and played for the Texans in 2020. He interviewed for the team's head coaching job in January 2021, a handful of weeks before he was officially released by the team in March.

The long-time NFL quarterback didn't play for a team in 2021, but that makes his candidacy for the job only a little less peculiar in 2022.

McCown is only one of a few off-the-wall candidates for the Texans job, though. Last week, Houston interviewed former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward for the vacancy, who is still very new to coaching. Ward spent a couple seasons as an offensive assistant with the New York Jets and only became the wide receivers coach at Florida Atlantic University in November.

Houston also interviewed New England Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, who was still an NFL player in 2015.

The Texans fired David Culley after only one year following a 4-13 season.
