The Houston Texans are re-signing veteran defensive back Tavierre Thomas, according to reports Wednesday evening.

Thomas is heading back to the Texans after a successful two-year stint, where he established himself as one of Houston's best defensive backs.

In 27 career games in Houston, Thomas has recorded 127 tackles (74 solo), five pass deflections, three force fumbles, a pair of interceptions and one touchdown.

Thomas finished the 2022 campaign as one of the Texans' highest-graded defenders. He registered a defensive coverage grade of 75.0 — according to Pro Football Focus. Thomas' deal to return to Houston is worth $3 million.

"TT [Tavierre Thomas] gives us an edge, and a guy that has played a lot of ball for us on the interior," cornerbacks coach Dino Vasso said. "Toughness, instincts speed, so great to have him back in the room. He gives us more versatility so he’s not sitting on the sideline when TT goes in. He has the versatility to play outside on the perimeter."

The Texans have retained three players from their secondary corps with the re-signing of Thomas. Houston also re-signed defensive backs, M.J. Stewart and Eric Murray.

Veteran cornerback Jimmie Ward was the lone new player the Texans added to their cornerbacks' unit while allowing Tremon Smith to sign with the Denver Broncos.

The Texans have also added defensive linemen Sheldon Rankins and Hassan Ridgeway to help boost their subpar defense in free agency.
