The New York Jets are acquiring Houston Texans pass rusher Shaq Lawson, agreeing to a trade to help fill the void created by the Carl Lawson injury.

New York found itself in the market for an edge defender since Lawson, its prized free-agent addition, tore his Achilles during practice. After exploring trades with several teams, the Jets struck a deal with the Texans on Sunday afternoon.

The deal, reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, comes just days after rumors surfaced that Lawson was one of the most discussed trade candidates around the NFL.

Houston acquired him from the Miami Dolphins this offseason, exchanging him for linebacker Benadrick McKinney.

Lawson recorded 18 quarterback hits in 14 games this past season, generating solid pressure against opposing teams. He received respectable marks against both the pass (65.9) and in run defense (66.1) from Pro Football Focus, finishing with a 70.9 overall grade.

According to The Athletic’s Aaron Reiss, the Texans will carry a $1.7 million dead cap this season and Lawson’s contract will count for $5.3 million on their books next season.
