Texans' Tyrod Taylor ready to replace Deshaun Watson as starting QB

The Houston Texans signed veteran journeyman quarterback Tyrod Taylor in March at a time when Houston QB1 Deshaun Watson was demanding a trade and "extremely serious" about never playing another down for the organization. Watson's status in the league dramatically changed, however, after it was learned he's facing at least 22 lawsuits regarding allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.

Texans owner Cal McNair and general manager Nick Caserio understandably haven't been able to provide information about Watson's future this spring, but what is known is the 25-year-old star signal-caller is skipping voluntary organized team activities. While speaking on Thursday, Taylor made it clear he's prepared to replace someone of Watson's talent.

"Of course, yes, Deshaun played at a very high level," Taylor explained, per Sarah Barshop of ESPN. "He's played at a very high level throughout his career. I've been a fan of his, and I know him personally. But the opportunity to be able to start here is something that I look forward to."

Houston signed Taylor, in part, because he worked under current passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton when both were with the Los Angeles Chargers last year.

As for Watson, it remains unknown if he'll land on the commissioner's exempt list before the preseason or face a suspension for at least part of the 2021 campaign through the NFL's personal conduct policy.
