If coach DeMeco Ryans did not feel back at home yet in Houston, he does now.
On Sunday, Ryans met with Janice McNair, owner of the Texans. Janice, widow of the late Bob McNair, has of course been involved with the franchise since Ryans’ first stint in Houston as a player.
In the short exchange between Ryans and McNair, the two expressed their excitement for the future, McNair saying that there will be “lots of celebrations.”
Ryans’ reception by the owner made clear Houston's sentiment toward having a former Texan take charge on the sidelines. For a team that has gone through three coaching changes in as many years, finding a coach who can bring consistency is comforting.
The former San Francisco defensive coordinator also reiterated that he had landed his dream job with the Texans, which McNair said was the case for Houston as well - in landing a dream coach.
Having co-founded the Texans back in 1999, McNair has been around for all of the team’s head coaches and their tenures. So for Houston to give Ryans a long-term (six years) contract shows their willingness to buy into him and what he can bring to the team.
Ryans has talked of the Texans being “deep in his heart” - and now we see that the coach and the owner have a “meeting of the hearts,” one might day.
