Texans WR has high expectations for first season with team

Robert Woods will play with his third different team in as many seasons in 2023 after signing a two-year deal with the Houston Texans in March.

"Bobby Trees" is coming off of a forgettable season with the Tennessee Titans where he posted career-worst numbers in receiving yards (527), yards per reception (9.9) and receiving yards per game (31.0). Woods also recorded the second-worst catch percentage of his career (58.2%) and had only two receiving scores despite playing in all 17 regular season games.

Woods is looking to put all of that behind him with a fresh start in Houston.

"I had my fewest yards and might have just as well had my second-fewest attempts. I'm able to make the plays and do more with more," Woods said, per ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime. "And I think that was the thing when I got to L.A., I saw my catches go from 50 a year to 90, to 100. And obviously, I doubled my yards and doubled the stats."

The 31-year-old had back-to-back seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards in 2018 and 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams, and after another solid campaign in 2020, Woods suffered a season-ending torn ACL midway through the 2021 season.

He celebrated his February release from the Titans on Twitter.

"It's just about getting the opportunity to make plays and help contribute to the team. That's what I'm hoping to do here in Houston, have opportunities to make big plays and be myself and do what I'm capable of doing," Woods said, per Bien-Aime.

Now that Brandin Cooks is on the Dallas Cowboys, Woods could find himself at the top of the Texans wide receivers depth chart in the fall. Houston also has Nico Collins and 2022 second-round pick John Metchie (who is returning after missing his rookie year with leukemia) as projected wideout starters.

It was also reported last week that former Texans All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins was interested in a potential reunion with the franchise that selected him in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
