Texans WR returns to field after missing rookie year with leukemia

NFL fans received some heartwarming news regarding Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie on Wednesday morning.

Metchie starred at Alabama from 2019-21, posting 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns, including 96 catches for 1,142 receiving yards and eight scores in his final season alone. He was selected by the Texans in the second round at 44th overall during the 2022 NFL Draft but announced his leukemia diagnosis three months later.

Houston general manager Nick Caserio gave a positive update on Metchie's status in January, saying that the 22-year-old looked "better now than he did when we drafted him in the spring."

The Metchie situation could be one of the feel-good stories to look out for heading into the fall, as he should have the chance to make an immediate impact once on the field in game action. Depending on how Houston uses their draft picks, Metchie could be high on the team's depth chart.

The Texans added veteran Robert Woods and former Dallas Cowboys wideout Noah Brown this offseason but other than that, the group may have plenty of openings for targets this season.
