The one surprise position the Cowboys may target in NFL Draft

After meeting with multiple wideouts, the Cowboys possibly showed their hand before the draft.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Dallas met with Boston College's Zay Flowers on Monday. It hosted Tennessee's Jalin Hyatt and TCU's Quentin Johnston on Tuesday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

According to Tankathon, Johnston and Flowers are projected first-round picks, while Hyatt is a high second-rounder.

Seeing the Cowboys prioritize WRs early in the draft is a surprise since they addressed the No. 2 slot after trading for Brandin Cooks, who joins CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup.

However, outside of these three WRs, Dallas lacks depth. Also, it must account for the departure of TE Dalton Schultz, who was second on the team in receiving TDs (five in 15 games) in 2022.

"Teams need at least four quality players at the position," wrote The Athletic's Jon Machota. "If the right player is there, it still makes sense at (No. 26 overall)."

QB Dak Prescott also factors into the interest at WR since there's a notable spike in his performance when he's surrounded by dependable options.

In 2021, Prescott threw for a career-high 37 TDs and set the second-highest passer rating of his career (104.2) in 16 games. Three players crossed the 60-reception mark and four recorded six TDs or more.

Last season, Prescott only had one wideout who eclipsed these numbers. Consequently, his passer rating fell to 91.1, and he threw a career-high 15 interceptions in 12 games.

Thus, adding one more reliable target could spring Dallas's offense to the next level, legitimizing its Super Bowl contender status.

Dallas can feel confident about selecting a WR in the first round because it has a solid track record under owner Jerry Jones. It has picked Pro Bowlers like Lamb and Dez Bryant during this time frame.
