The three calls Steelers should make this offseason

The Steelers have an important offseason ahead after losing their fifth straight playoff game since 2016.

Former QB and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes Pittsburgh should make three calls to fix its quarterback problem.

"The No. 1 call should be to Chicago," Orlovsky said. "You're trying to see where they stand with Justin Fields, if they're going to take somebody at No. 1 or keep him."

The Bears have the difficult decision between sticking with Fields as their quarterback or drafting a rookie, likely USC's Caleb Williams, with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

If Chicago opts to move on from Fields, the Steelers should absolutely try to trade for him. It would likely take a day-two pick to acquire him and he'd instantly give them a much higher upside at quarterback.

The 24-year-old has thrown for 4,804 yards and 33 touchdowns while adding 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground from 2022-23.

"The second call would be to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Orlovsky added. "I don't think Baker Mayfield is going to leave them considering they're in the divisional round playoffs, but I would make that my second call."

Who would have thought that Mayfield, Pittsburgh's former rival, would be one of its top options in 2024?

The 28-year-old has revived his career, throwing for a career-high 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns with the Buccaneers in 2023.

It would be surprising if Tampa Bay didn't do whatever it took to re-sign him this offseason. But if the two sides are unable to come to an agreement, the Steelers should try to steal him away if Fields stays with the Bears.

"My third call would be the Vikings," Orlovsky finished. "Where do you stand on Kirk Cousins because you can't go into next season with just Kenny Pickett."

Cousins has been one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the league for some time, passing for 15,364 yards, 115 touchdowns and 39 interceptions from 2020-23.

The 35-year-old's season was cut short, however, after suffering a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 8. If Cousins can get fully healthy and return to his high level of play, he could certainly help Pittsburgh win now.

Orlovsky still believes QB Kenny Pickett should have a chance to compete for the starting job. But unless he shows more, he'll be riding the bench once again in 2024 just as he did to end this season.
