These quarterbacks have the best odds of joining the New York Jets in 2023

The fallout from Aaron Rodgers' season-ending Achilles injury continued for the New York Jets in Week 2 as starting quarterback Zach Wilson threw three interceptions in a 30-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. There is no denying that the Cowboys are a tough team to bet against right now, but Wilson's performance has only furthered rumors that the Jets will replace him under center in the near future.

Everyone from analysts to fans has an opinion on who they think the next Jets QB1 will be if Wilson gets benched, so it's no surprise that oddsmakers are turning it into a prop situation. Who exactly has the best odds of being New York's next gunslinger if Wilson can't get the job done?

According to Adam Thompson of bookies.com, former MVP Matt Ryan is the 5-1 favorite to be the next New York Jets starting quarterback behind Wilson, who is still listed at 7-2 odds to keep the starting job.

Ryan is a free agent following an underwhelming 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts. Given how much he struggled behind Indy's leaky offensive line, critics have already pointed out that the 38-year-old won't fair well behind a Jets O-line that let Rodgers get pummeled.

However, Ryan's name has already been floated around for the better part of the week. Given his availability and playing expertise, Matty Ice could be the seasoned veteran who lets other parts of New York's game -- mainly its defense -- shine.

Another QB with 5-1 odds for being the next New York Jets starter? Colt McCoy. The 37-year-old was surprisingly released by the Arizona Cardinals prior to the start of the season and has been fielding offers ever since. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that the Jets have already reached out to McCoy about joining Gang Green and plans on making a decision about his future "sooner rather than later." McCoy is also coming off of an elbow injury, which makes him an even more interesting option.

The shortlist for who could become the next Jets QB1 includes Joe Flacco (13-2), which is no surprise given he previously spent three seasons in the Jets organization. There is also Seattle Seahawks backup QB Drew Lock (9-1), although the Seahawks may want to hold onto him since they don't have anyone else to back up Geno Smith.

Carson Wentz rounds out the leading odds-getters at 10-1, although the Jets should really weigh his history of injuries and locker room shenanigans if they want him on the team.

Of course, Wilson is still tapped as the starter heading into Week 3 at home against the New England Patriots. With how quickly things change in the NFL, however, it's worth it to keep an eye on how the Jets' quarterback situation shakes out -- and how accurate these odds really were.
