The Los Angeles Rams entered the offseason in dire straits. The team was projected to be well over the salary cap, which limits how active they can be in free agency. When you combine that with their lack of a first-round pick, their outlook isn’t pretty.
That is part of the reason why the team opted to trade away star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. He was sent to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for tight end Hunter Long and the No. 77 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Moving Ramsey was a start, but there is still plenty of work left for the Rams to do.
Another player who could potentially be on the move is wide receiver, Allen Robinson. Robinson was the team’s big-ticket free agency acquisition in 2022 but was one of the biggest flops of the season.
Unable to ever get on the same page with Matthew Stafford, Robinson put up the least productive season of his career. He caught only 33 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. Outside of the season when he was injured in Week 1, 2022 was the toughest of Robinson’s career.
Robinson and the Rams just don’t seem to be a match. Looking to get out from under his deal, the franchise has granted him permission to seek a trade according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com.
Moving Robinson will be easier said than done. He signed a three-year, $45 million deal in free agency last year but is coming off back-to-back down seasons. The Rams can clear $6.9 million by moving him, but it would not be surprising if Los Angeles had to pick up some of the salary. That would lower how much they save but also could increase how much compensation they receive.
One team that could be an interesting landing spot for him according to Bleacher Report is his former club, the Chicago Bears. The Bears have been spending big upgrading their roster this offseason. They have already pulled off one blockbuster trade this offseason with the Carolina Panthers, sending the No. 1 overall pick to them in exchange for four draft picks and wide receiver D.J. Moore.
Bringing Robinson back into the fold along with Moore would give Justin Fields a very strong group of wide receivers to work with. Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool were already on the roster, giving Fields arguably the deepest group of pass catchers to work with in the NFL.
At this point, it seems unlikely that the Bears would dump more assets into the wide receiver position. Moore gives them a legitimate No. 1 option in the passing game and tight end Cole Kmet is still in the fold.
Also, as a run-first team, this isn’t an offense built to cater to five pass-catchers. Robinson would have made some sense before the deal with the Panthers, but now with Moore atop the depth chart, depth is more important than another high-priced veteran. The Rams will have to look elsewhere to find a landing spot for Robinson.
