The Chargers responded to a tough loss at home with a dominant win over Houston on the road. This was a statement game for the Charger’s depth at multiple positions including replacing their All-Pro Left Tackle Rashawn Slater. Here are three takeaways from the Charger’s 34-24 victory in Houston.
The Chargers might be ok without Rashawn Slater:
This is not to say that LA won’t miss their All-Pro Left Tackle, but Jamaree Salyer had a dominant performance against the Houston pass rush. In his short career, Salyer hasn’t played Left Tackle as a pro in practice or in games. He has been primarily taking reps at the Guard position throughout the year. He played 100% of the offensive snaps tonight and allowed zero sacks to the Texan’s defensive front. The Georgia product could be a serious candidate to replace Trey Pipkins at Right Tackle next season.
Austin Ekeler is still him:
There have been many questions from fans and beat writers about Austin Ekeler’s ability to contribute so far this year. Ekeler posted an abysmal 2.5 yards per carry through the first three games with zero touchdowns. Tonight, the star put up an incredible statistic line, carrying the ball for 4.6 YPC, 60 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 6 passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns. Fantasy owners have to be ecstatic about the performance Ekeler put on tonight after a very slow start.
The Coaches need to learn how to close out games:
The Chargers were able to start off the game hot after starting off with a 21-0 lead they went into halftime with a score of 27-7. However, late in the game, the Charger’s offense seemed to sputter out, only scoring on one of their six offensive drives in the second half. They also gave up 17 unanswered points to a weak Texans offense searching for their first win in the second half. A late touchdown with 2:28 left on the clock from Austin Ekeler ultimately sealed the game. The Chargers need to keep their foot on the gas in these games when they come up big early. Allowing opponents to get themselves back into games can be the death of this team, as we saw in week two against Kansas City.
Star of the Game:
Justin Herbert had an incredible performance against the Texans on Sunday afternoon. The third-year Quarterback posted his seventh straight road game with over 300 yards. He was able to couple that with two passing touchdowns and a 69% completion percentage.
