With the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected Western Michigan’s Corey Davis, making him the first wide receiver off the board. Just two picks later, the Los Angeles Chargers jumped on Clemson wide out Mike Williams.

Seven years later, it’s clear that Williams was the best option of the top receivers in the draft class. He has two 1,000-yard seasons in his NFL career while averaging over 65 yards per game since 2019.

Williams is a solid WR2, and after he was released by the Chargers on Wednesday, the Titans now have a chance to right Robinson’s miss and bring him to Nashville. But should they?

Should the Titans target Mike Williams?

It’s inarguable that Mike Williams is better than almost every wide receiver on the Titans roster. After DeAndre Hopkins, there’s nothing but uncertainty with this current receiving corps. Williams would be an instant upgrade, even coming off of an ACL tear during the 2023 season. But that doesn’t mean he should be someone the Titans target.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. And in my opinion, the Titans should be out on Williams.

Williams will be turning 30 during the 2024 season. He has played in just 16 games over the last two years combined and most importantly, is coming off an ACL tear. That’s a guy who is too unreliable for my liking.

For a team looking to add a weapon that pushes them over the top, Williams should absolutely be on their radar. But for a team like the Titans that needs reliability as they try to establish new offensive era, I’d look elsewhere.

In my opinion, Curtis Samuel or Tyler Boyd on short-term a contract would be a better fit both financially and schematically. Add one of them to the slot, draft Rome Odunze or Malik Nabers to play opposite of Hopkins, and boom…let Callahan and Levis cook. But let's stay away from older wide receivers coming off of major injuries.
