Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced Sunday morning that he tested positive for COVID-19, the results coming just hours after a preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Vrabel told reporters over Zoom that he experienced a sore throat and went for testing at the Titans’ facility. A short time later, the results determined he has COVID-19.
The Titans just spent the past week holding joint practices with the Buccaneers and played them on Saturday. Vrabel arrived for the game without a mask, which vaccinated players and coaches are allowed to do under NFL rules.
Tennessee’s coach must return two negative tests within a 48-hour window before receiving clearance to return to the team. The organization is conducting contact tracing, but the Titans coaching staff is fully vaccinated.
No other Titans players or coaches tested positive for the coronavirus during Sunday’s testing, but the team will likely exercise extreme caution in the next few days.
