Tommy DeVito turned down lucrative offer from division rival to join Giants

New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito is arguably one of the most popular people in the city these days after winning back-to-back starts the last two weeks, accounting for half of the team’s wins this season.

But had an NFC East division rival had it their way, DeVito wouldn’t even be on New York’s roster.

DeVito’s agent Sean Stellato recently confirmed to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo that his client actually had more lucrative offers on the table before signing with the Giants but he turned them down to play for his hometown team.

“The Commanders came in with an offer for significantly more guaranteed money than the Giants were proposing,” Garafolo said. “But to play in Jersey and play for Brian Daboll’s coaching staff, that’s why DeVito decided to sign with the Giants. Then, at final cuts when he was being waived before being added to the practice squad, the Patriots inquired about the chance for him to join their practice squad.”

An undrafted rookie out of Illinois, DeVito is 2-2 as the Giants starting quarterback after taking over when both Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor both went down with injuries. The 25-year-old signal-caller has completed 62.9% of his passes for 697 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions over the last four-plus weeks.

Ironically, his two wins are against the Commanders and Patriots — both teams he spurned to stay with the Giants — becoming the first undrafted rookie QB to start and win a game against Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
