2022 was a big season for running back Tony Pollard. After playing a part-time role with the Dallas Cowboys behind Ezekiel Elliott for the first three seasons of his career, he took on a bigger role in the offense this season and thrived.
Tony Pollard proved that he can not only be a featured back when the need arises but a true dual-threat. He ran the ball 193 times for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns, adding 39 receptions for 371 yards and three touchdowns. All of those numbers either set or tied a career-high as he earned his first Pro Bowl nomination as well.
Without much tread on his tires, given his usage early in his career, Tony Pollard could be the most sought-after running back on the market this offseason. He turns only 26 in April and has a fraction of the career touches some of the other running backs who will be available this offseason.
That makes for a perfect combination for prospective teams. When seeking out which team could be the best fit, the Denver Broncos could be a dark horse for Tony Pollard this offseason.
The Broncos made a splash already this offseason, trading for head coach Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints and signing him to a multi-year contract. Given the uncertainty of Javonte Williams, who injured his knee during the 2022 season, it could make some sense to target Tony Pollard.
Williams’ status for the 2023 season and when he will be able to get on the field is certainly up for debate. He suffered his season-ending injury in Week 4, so there is certainly a chance that he will be ready to go at some point next season; how effective he will be is another concern.
Getting the offense back on track with Russell Wilson under center is Payton’s No. 1 goal for 2023. Adding a dynamic weapon to the backfield in Tony Pollard could be the first step in accomplishing that. He provides excellent insurance in case Williams is unable to return to form and has previously thrived in a two-running back system.
There could be opportunities to be the unquestioned starter elsewhere around the league, which could be very appealing to Tony Pollard. But, there is a lot of intriguing about joining a Payton-led offense after seeing what Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram were able to accomplish as the lead back with the Saints.
