Trey Lance details interaction with Dak Prescott, opens up about approach to new role

When the Dallas Cowboys struck a trade for former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, the obvious responses from many critics came out almost immediately.

Many wondered if the move was made to pressure starter Dak Prescott and help in negotiations with his new contract, and others believed Lance could be the one groomed as an eventual successor.

Realistically, there's no reason to believe that either one of those two things will prove to be true. And if you ask Lance himself, it appears the new Cowboys quarterback has a completely different focus than the one coming from some of the anti-Prescott crowd.

As ESPN's Todd Archer detailed, Lance admitted he had a "big smile" on his face and was "very excited" to be a member of the Cowboys. But going beyond that, he had the highest of praise for Prescott and said he's excited to learn "everything" he can from the team's starting quarterback.

"The type of person he is, first and foremost. I think everyone knows that, with the Walter Payton Man of the Year and things like that, how he treats people, how I've seen him treat people just in the building these few days," Lance said. "The few conversations I had with him, just texting him when I had my ankle injury, things like that. Just the type of person he is. And obviously, the football stuff kind of speaks for itself. I'm still trying to learn Day 1 install, so for me, obviously got a long way to go there. But definitely looking forward to being a sponge, just soaking up everything I can from him."

Lance appears to be focused on the here and now, not the "what if" of the entire situation. Instead, he's rightfully understanding the fact that Prescott can help him take leaps forward in his career and appears to be focused on doing just that in every way possible.

As for the future, that's anyone's guess. But attempting to replace Prescott at a time when he's consistently been one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the NFL, would be a wild argument for anyone to try to make, and it'd just be flat-out wrong.
