The Tulane Green Wave have been on an amazing roll for the beginning of this college football season. After beating the number 25 team in the nation in Kansas State. The Green Wave backed that up with a disappointing loss to the Southern Mississippi.

Tulane Green Wave loses 27-24

If you break down the statistics, you would be baffled at how Tulane loss their first game of the season. They dominated in every way a team can on the gridiron.

Gaining roughly 200 more total yards than Southern Mississippi, 50 yards more in the air, another 150 yard advantage on the ground.

The Green Wave doubled their first downs, 26 to 13 as well as 24 more plays. Holding Southern Mississippi to only 3 total first downs and winning the time of possession game by 14 minutes.

Again I ask, how did Tulane lose this game?

Third Down Sacks

After taking a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, Tulane allowed a third down sack in their own red zone, punting the ball away and giving Southern Mississippi great field position.

In which they scored their first touchdown. Going into the half Tulane still led the game, 17-10, however in the 2nd half the offense could not get back on track.

A number of 3rd down sacks gave the momentum away, allowed short fields in which Southern Mississippi took advantage of.

Then one pick 6 thrown by Tulane allowed Southern Mississippi to take a commanding 27-17 lead. An astonishing 27-3 run from the second quarter until 19 seconds left in the fourth sealed the deal.

Looking Forward

The Green Wave will need to get that taste out of their mouth, regroup and refocus on Friday’s night game against Houston. Who in their own right, is a scoring machine.

Should of, could of, would of’s do not count for much in a football game. The 2022 Green Wave should be and could be coming into this huge match-up undefeated. However that is not the case.

Seeing how this Tulane program responds this week will be an indicator as to who this team is. A team coming into the season projected as winning 6 games, already has 3 under their belt.

(Tulane v Houston Preview will come Wednesday 09/28)
