Urban Meyer says Jaguars' 'phone is buzzing' ahead of trade deadline

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't done much winning in the first two months of Urban Meyer's NFL coaching career, but they've been busy on the trade market. With the trade deadline coming on Tuesday, Nov. 2, the team doesn't appear to be done yet, either.

“We already met on it today, so the phone is buzzing," Meyer said of the deadline, via Sports Illustrated's John Shipley. "I don’t know all that yet, but I know if there’s a chance to make us better, we listen.”

Since August, the Jaguars have shipped away quarterback Gardner Minshew, linebacker Joe Schobert, and cornerbacks Sidney Jones and CJ Henderson. They acquired tight end Dan Arnold in the deal that sent Henderson to the Carolina Panthers.

While a slowly rebuilding team like the Jaguars — who currently sit with a 1-5 record — would typically be more interested in accruing draft picks ahead of the deadline, that may not be the case for Jacksonville. Meyer suggested Wednesday that the team may be in the market for a wide receiver now that top threat D.J. Chark Jr. is on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

"How do you build this around your quarterback? What exactly do we need?" Meyer said, via SI. "The thing we don’t have is when DJ [Chark Jr.] went down, do we have that home run hitter on the outside? I think Laviska [Shenault Jr.]’s playing very well. Marvin [Jones Jr.]’s playing really well. We’re just one speed guy short. It might be [Jamal] Agnew, maybe it’s Tyron [Johnson], maybe it’s something else.”

The Jaguars selected quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Through six games, Lawrence has thrown seven touchdown passess and eight interceptions. While the chances of Jacksonville making a playoff run in 2021 are slim, adding talent around Lawrence may be worth more than future draft capital in the long run.
