Urban Meyer: Tebow just 'one of 90 trying to make the team'

If nothing else, the Jacksonville Jaguars generated plenty of attention and headlines by signing former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow as a tight end earlier this month even though Tebow hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2012 and turns 34 years old in August.

On Thursday, Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer admitted it was maybe "awkward" to see the former signal-caller in his new position but insisted Tebow has no roster spot guaranteed ahead of training camp.

"But it's one of 90 trying to make the team," Meyer said, according to Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "He has improved, it's all new for him. (Tight ends coach) Tyler Bowen is doing a good job. Our tight ends as a whole -- [James] O'Shaughnessy and [Ben] Ellefson in particular -- if you watch a video last year and watch practice now it's night and day. Those guys have really improved and the position is trending upward. They're doing a nice job."

Earlier in the day, ESPN's Dianna Russini reiterated previous stories that Meyer and his staff view Tebow as a "Swiss Army Knife" offensive weapon similar to Taysom Hill of the New Orleans Saints. Assuming that's true, it's difficult to imagine Tebow won't be on the roster past August unless he flops in preseason action.
