Veteran kicker's wild ride continues after release from Rams

The Los Angeles Rams released Brett Maher on Tuesday, continuing the veteran kicker's wild ride throughout the NFL.

The decision came two days after the 33-year-old missed two field goals and one extra point in the Rams' 24-17 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7. Maher had ample opportunities to impress the team over seven contests, leading the league in field goals attempted (23) and tying for first in field goals made (17).

He went a perfect 7-for-7 on field goals under 40 yards during his time with Los Angeles and 7-for-9 on attempts between 40 and 49 yards, but struggled by converting only three of his seven tries from beyond 50 yards.

Maher's Sunday troubles are far from the first time he's dealt with inaccurate kicks in recent memory.

The University of Nebraska product infamously missed four consecutive extra point attempts during the Dallas Cowboys' NFC wild-card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January.

Maher's third stint with the Cowboys ended last offseason and he was signed by the Denver Broncos in July. Maher went 73-for-74 on extra points and 50-for-68 across his first two NFL seasons (including the playoffs) with Dallas in 2018 and 2019 and won three NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors before spending the 2020 campaign on numerous teams' practice squads

He went 16-for-18 on field goals and 10-for-12 on extra points over eight games with the New Orleans Saints in 2021 before re-joining the Cowboys.

Maher was released by Denver in late-August after the Broncos traded for former Pro Bowler Wil Lutz. Maher went 0-for-2 on field goals in Denver's preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals this summer before recovering to go 4-for-4 and 7-for-7 on field goals and extra points, respectively, across Weeks 2 and 3 of the preseason.

He was signed to the Rams practice squad just one day after being released by the Broncos and was elevated to the active roster ahead of Week 1.
