Vikings' Mike Zimmer says RB Dalvin Cook is 'day-to-day' with shoulder injury

It was reported earlier in the day that Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook would likely be out a couple of weeks with a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum he suffered in Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers that dropped the Vikings to 5-6.

However, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer seemed to refute that story later on Monday.

According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Zimmer told reporters that Cook does not have a torn labrum and is considered "day-to-day" due to an unspecified shoulder injury ahead of this coming Sunday's game at the winless Detroit Lions. Zimmer wouldn't disclose if Cook dislocated the shoulder.

The initial report claimed Cook, who is fifth in the NFL this season with 773 rushing yards and 171 carries, would miss a minimum of two games but could possibly return for the matchup at the Chicago Bears on Dec. 20. League rules mandate Cook would have to sit out at least three contests if he's placed on injured reserve.

Backup Alexander Mattison rushed for over 110 yards on two occasions earlier this season when Cook was sidelined with an ankle injury. Mattison recorded 21 yards and a touchdown on seven carries with two catches for seven yards in the loss to the Niners.

Also on Monday, Minnesota placed veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson on the reserve/COVID-19 list after he tested positive for the virus.
