Vikings TE Irv Smith Jr. likely out for season after meniscus surgery

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. was expected to miss the beginning of the 2021 regular season after it was determined he would need surgery to repair a meniscus injury. However, he could be out much longer than that.

Smith underwent surgery to repair his meniscus Wednesday morning and is expected to be sidelined five to six months, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. His season is likely over.

Smith was preparing for a big season with the Vikings. It was supposed to be his first season as the franchise's top tight end after the departure of Kyle Rudolph to the New York Giants.

Last season, Smith caught 30 passes for 365 yards and five touchdowns.

The other tight ends on Minnesota's depth chart were Brandon Dillon, Zach Davidson and Shane Zylstra. On Tuesday, the Vikings acquired tight end Chris Herndon in a trade with the Jets, however.

However, Tyler Eifert, Josh Hill and Virgil Green are among the veteran tight ends still available. So, Minnesota does have options before the regular season begins in under two weeks.
