Washington could draft QB despite signing Ryan Fitzpatrick?

Journeyman veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick signed with the Washington Football Team early in free agency via a one-year deal that ESPN's Adam Schefter explained could be worth up to $12 million with incentives and that presumably made the 38-year-old the club's starter heading into the summer.

Don't look now, but the man affectionately known as "FitzMagic" could once again lose snaps to a rookie later this year.

ESPN's John Keim reports that Washington "will strongly consider drafting a quarterback if one they like is available." It was less than a year ago when the Miami Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa in the first round ahead of coach Brian Flores splitting QB duties between Tagovailoa and Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick ended the 2020 season with 2,091 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 4-3 record as a starter.

It's worth noting the situations aren't entirely similar. Washington currently sits 19th in the first-round draft order, and a majority of mock drafts on websites such as CBS Sports, NFL.com and Walter Football predict the top-rated signal-callers will be off the board well before Washington makes its first selection now that the San Francisco 49ers have moved up to pick No. 3.

The Football Team could always attempt to trade up, but the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and 49ers seem unlikely to move down at this point of the process.
