If Ryan Fitzpatrick is quarterbacking the Washington Football Team in 2022, the squad will have a new name. Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Football Team changed its name before the 2020 season, teasing the NFL world that a new logo and name would be released at a later date. While the current brand will remain in place for the upcoming season, we now have a date for the future reveal.

Daniel Snyder, who was recently fined $10 million following an NFL investigation into a toxic culture, relented after years of pressure and finally removed the franchise’s old name. Changing to the Washington Football Team was meant to be a temporary solution, buying time for the franchise to dedicate resources and research to a rebrand.

Jason Wright, president of the team, said in March that it would retain its current brand for the upcoming 2021 season. He also revealed that there was a real possibility everything stayed in place permanently thanks to growing support for the current name.

After nearly a year of deliberation, which included receiving input from fans, it seems the Washington Football Team will unveil everything next year.

Wright told The Washington Post this week that the club will unveil a new logo and team name early in 2022, well in advance of that NFL season.

While very few specifics were given, Wright shared that burgundy and gold will remain the franchise’s primary colors. This was expected, and the colors tie in with proposed names such as the Washington Redwolves, Washington Redtails and the Washington Aviators.
