Washington Football Team QB Ryan Fitzpatrick won't have surgery on hip
Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will not undergo surgery after suffering a hip subluxation in the team's season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
The 38-year-old will instead rehab his injury through other methods with hopes of returning to the field this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Fitzpatrick is expected to miss at least eight weeks, Rapoport adds.
If the rehab route does not work out, surgery could ultimately be Fitzpatrick's only way to return to full health. A procedure would surely shake up his return timeline.
Fitzpatrick signed a one-year, $10 million deal with Washington during the offseason after two years with the Miami Dolphins. He attempted just six passes against the Chargers before exiting and being replaced by Taylor Heinicke.
Heinicke completed 11-of-15 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown against L.A. He also ran for 17 yards. With Fitzpatrick sidelined, the 28-year-old is expected to be Ron Rivera's starting quarterback.
Kyle Allen is also on Washington's roster and will likely back up Heinicke.
Washington is slated to take on the New York Giants Thursday night to open Week 2.
