Logan Thomas has made an incredible transition from quarterback to tight end for the Washington Football Team, and was rewarded on Tuesday with a three-year contract extension leading into training camp.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the news of Thomas’ deal, and while the financial details weren’t readily available, it’s a great move by Washington in any event.
Just after signing star defensive lineman Jonathan Allen to a massive extension, the Football Team is obviously not messing around when it comes to retaining quality in-house talent.
Thomas once caught the eye of Bruce Arians and the Arizona Cardinals as a quarterback prospect who was drafted in the fourth round in 2014. The Virginia Tech product ultimately fell short at that position, but had the wherewithal to embrace a position change, capitalizing on his size and athleticism in a different way.
After a couple seasons with the Buffalo Bills and a one-year stint with the Detroit Lions, Thomas signed with Washington last year. What a move it turned out to be.
In a Football Team passing attack that lacked dynamic receivers outside of Terry McLaurin, Thomas shined, hauling in 72 catches for 670 yards and six touchdowns.

Washington front offices of years past would misguidedly overspend for free agents and take unmeasured risks in all areas of personnel. This was largely due to the hands-on style of owner Daniel Snyder, who’s been taking a backseat in recent years, and it’s translated to more success.
The culture is improving, and the hiring of Ron Rivera as head coach prior to last season worked wonders, as the Football Team won the NFC East despite an unstable quarterback situation. Snyder brought that on by insisting Dwayne Haskins should be drafted. The 2019 first-round pick was released and is now in Pittsburgh.
It looks like this organization is finally headed in the right direction, and fast. Thomas is a microcosm of that positive movement — and the best may be yet to come for him.
With Ryan Fitzpatrick in at QB, Washington can stretch the field vertically much more this coming season. Plus, joining McLaurin in the receiving corps are prized free agent Curtis Samuel and third-round rookie Dyami Brown, who averaged over 20 yards per catch during his final two seasons at North Carolina.
Thanks to having one of the NFL’s elite defenses, the Football Team should be routinely getting the ball on short fields off of turnovers. This is only going to help, and Thomas’ size and continued understanding of the nuances at his position are only going to make him more of a red-zone scoring threat in the years to come.
