Last year’s undrafted rookie Steven Montez is actually ineligible to participate in this week’s rookie minicamp due to service time. Therefore, the Washington Football Team has brought in former XFL star Jordan Ta’amu to have a quarterback present in this week’s rookie camp.

Ta’amu became an XFL success story as he thrived in five starts with the St. Louis Battlehawks. There he threw for 1,050 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions before the league suspended operations in April 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

His backup quarterback was none other than Taylor Heinicke, who will compete for the starting quarterback in Washington.

Ta’amu, 23, spent time last season with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions practice squads. He signed a reserve/future contract with Kansas City in January but was waived earlier this week.

The odds of him sticking in Washington appear slim. But the tryout gives him an opportunity to impress and maybe get Washington’s brass thinking as they search for answer at quarterback beyond the 2021 season.
