Watch: Chiefs DT Chris Jones called for another bogus 'roughing the passer' penalty on MNF
Football is no longer football. At least it will no longer be football if sacks like the one Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones put on Derek Carr on Monday Night Football will continue to be called roughing the passer.
Seriously, enough is enough. The terrible "roughing the passer" call on Tom Brady on Sunday was one thing. At this point, we're used to Tom Terrific getting the calls in his favor. Heck, he's earned it.
But what the refs called "roughing the passer" on Monday Night Football?
Take a look:
Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls. You've just witnessed easily one of the worst calls by a referee in not just the history of football, but the history of competitive sports as a whole.
Nothing about that tackle was flag-worthy.
Jones got to Carr on time. He wrapped him up, textbook. He didn't drive him to the ground unless that's considered driving to the ground nowadays which means that all of football has become a penalty. He also got off Carr as soon as possible.
Again, that was not "roughing the passer" and from henceforth this writer suggests that anytime that penalty is mentioned in an NFL football game it should have quotations around it.
It has become the NFL version of Voldemort. The "penalty that should not be named."
Seriously, if this keeps up the NFL is going to have a major problem on its hands. If you can't tackle the quarterback as Jones did there, you may as well take off the pads, add the flags, and get this farce over with.
