The Detroit Lions have been a punching bag for decades now.

That only got worse in 2021 as the team jumped out to an 0-10-1 start to the season.

Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings seemed to be another automatic loss, until the impossible happened.

Jared Goff threw a game-winning touchdown as time expired and Ford Field erupted as the Lions ensured they would not go winless in 2021.

Seeing Goff and head coach Dan Campbell celebrate shows fans just how much even one win means to this group.

This marks the duo’s first win in Detroit and finally means they can focus on winning and not just avoiding a winless season.

What This Win Means

Yes, the Lions only improved to 1-10-1 on the season with Sunday’s victory.

But any win in the NFL is tough to come by and the Lions were able to take down a Vikings team that entered Sunday with realistic playoff expectations.

This validates Campbell’s belief that his team is indeed competitive and means they can focus on picking up a few more before the season ends.

Goff leading the Lions down the field to win also shows he is not going to fold in big moments.

He has had his struggles all year, but still unveiled a vintage performance to prove he at least deserves to not be run out of town in 2022.

His contract means he is going to be around next year, but the point remains the same.

The Lions got close all season and finally got the job done Sunday.

A winless season could have put Campbell on the hot seat in his first year on the job, while Goff would have been labeled as a quarterback to avoid once his contract was up.

One win still has the Lions in the bottom of the NFL standings.

Yet it proves they at least have the right mindset going forward to be a competitive team, and they deserve to have a big celebration following this exciting win.
