Watch: Raiders first-round pick Tyree Wilson lifts Rodger Goodell
Tyree Wilson had a different approach to his hug with NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell during the NFL Draft on Thursday.
After the Raiders selected the Texas Tech DE with the No. 7 overall pick, Wilson lifted Goodell off the ground.
It wasn't Wilson being unable to contain his excitement, but a move he planned. In a recent interview with NFL Network's "Good Morning Football," Wilson demonstrated what he intended to do; his raw strength shocked co-host Kyle Brandt.
The Raiders need more power on their defensive line since they struggled to generate a consistent pass rush last season. Las Vegas had 27 sacks, 30th in the NFL.
According to NFL.com, Wilson was the second-best defensive end prospect behind Alabama's Will Anderson Jr.
He has an impressive frame at 6-foot-6, 275 pounds and an 86-inch wingspan. Scouts believe he could flourish if he harnesses his physical upside.
"(Wilson is) a long-limbed defender who figures to turn into a full-blown nightmare if he continues to grow into his frame and game," NFL.com's Lance Zierlein wrote. "Wilson has the physical tools to create pocket push as a power rusher early on, but the hand usage and the rush plan will need tutoring."
Perhaps Pro Bowl DE Maxx Crosby can serve as a mentor. The Raiders also have four-time Pro Bowler Chandler Jones, who could help Wilson.
The Raiders could form a fearsome pass-rushing trio if Wilson turns into a star. It looks like a solid pick for Las Vegas since Wilson has enormous potential and fills a critical need.
